University of Missouri-Kansas City has a tight hold on the future while being proud and respectful of its history. One of the four campuses in the University of Missouri network, the school is on the move and ready for growth and community interaction at all times.
The University of Kansas City was chartered in 1929 as the UKC Board of Trustees began a push for a citywide search for
funding for the university.
A local philanthropist by the name of William Volker donated 40 acres of his land in the Kansas City area and also provided the capital to purchase the university's first building which is now located in the center of campus and still stands as Scofield Hall.
Classes enrolled, despite the Great Depression in 1933 with approximately 264 students and 17 teachers. Continuing it's success through the years, the University of Kansas City joined the University of Missouri school system in 1963 And thus...UMKC was born!
